how does ARC and hdmi av receivers work? - Audio - Home theatre

thanks..i guess i misunderstood ARC then so really the only benefit of ARC is one less cable (the optical from tv > receiver)? would the TV just stay on one source, then the receiver switches between hdmi sources? the onkyo has 3 hdmi inputs and 1 output.
