Why do you pay for PLC programming software?

I did a small project that required several small PLCs. 32 I/O x 5. I looked around and found this. Mitsubishi gave me their DOS based software for free. The small brick PLC cost me 450 USD ea for 32 I/O. The cable was 120 USD. The AB software was 1500 US
